Complex Anxiety

Calm on the Outside & Anxious on the Inside

You hold it together—but your mind never stops.

This isn’t everyday worry. It’s deep, wired-in anxiety shaped by a lifetime of managing, anticipating, and performing calm under pressure.
At Liminal Psych, we work with high-functioning women whose anxiety is rooted in early emotional patterns and unresolved relational stress.

What We Focus On:

  • Understanding where your anxiety started (not just how it shows up now)

  • Calming your nervous system through somatic and attachment-based techniques

  • Identifying inner parts of you that carry pressure, perfectionism, or fear

  • Learning to feel safe inside your own mind and body again

You don’t have to hold your breath to get through the day.
Therapy can help you take a breath and exhale.

  • Anxiety doesn’t always look like panic attacks. For many of the women I work with, it shows up in subtle but relentless ways, commonly beneath a polished, capable exterior. You may look calm and put-together on the outside, while inside your mind never stops running.

Signs of high-functioning anxiety can include: such as:

    • Constant overthinking or mentally rehearsing worst-case scenarios

    • Lying awake at night replaying conversations or planning tomorrow’s to-do list

    • Feeling “on edge” or restless even while accomplishing everything

    • Struggling to relax or enjoy downtime without guilt

    • Over-scheduling, over-functioning, or people-pleasing to avoid letting others down

    • Headaches, muscle tension, or stomach issues linked to stress

    • A polished, calm exterior—but an inner critic that never quiets down

If these feel familiar, you’re not alone. High-functioning anxiety often goes unnoticed by others, but it can feel relentless on the inside. Therapy can help you slow down, breathe again, and finally feel at ease in your own mind and body.

    • Racing thoughts, restlessness, and difficulty sleeping

    • Overthinking and constant “what if” worries

    • People-pleasing, perfectionism, and fear of letting others down

    • Feeling tense, on edge, or disconnected from your body

    • Irritability, overwhelm, and difficulty relaxing

    • A constant sense of pressure to perform, achieve, or manage everything

  • At Liminal Psych, anxiety therapy goes beyond surface-level coping skills. Together, we focus on:

    • Understanding where your anxiety started (not just how it shows up now)

    • Calming your nervous system through somatic and attachment-based techniques

    • Identifying inner parts of you that carry pressure, perfectionism, or fear (IFS therapy)

    • Processing root causes of stress and trauma with EMDR therapy

    • Rebuilding trust in yourself so you can feel safe inside your own mind and body again

  • There are many options for anxiety therapy, but women often come to me because they’re tired of surface-level solutions. You may have tried to push through, manage your schedule better, or silence your inner critic, but the anxiety keeps coming back.

I offer a trauma-informed, holistic approach that blends EMDR, IFS, somatic therapy, and attachment-based counseling to create lasting change. Sessions are available in-person in SouthPark (Charlotte, NC) or virtually across North Carolina.
